"Composers at that time (50's and 60's) seemed to have been trying solely to outdo one another in their smug arrogance and in writings that were ever more removed from human contact and experience. When the application of purely cerebral construction replaces the balance of intellect and feelings, the results are predictably self-limiting and eventually repulsive. This very nearly killed "classical" music by so alienating its audience that it was only by the barest good fortune that some essentially lyrical and even romantic composers were much later able to redeem the art. It is good to keep around some examples, such as this thing, to remind us just what dark and dead end alleys await the gullible."
